- Our remote commissioning process is designed to comply with the Commissioners for Taking Affidavits Act and Ontario Regulation 431/20 – Administering Oath or Declaration Remotely.
- You and the Commissioner meet by live video. Your identity is confirmed, the document is reviewed for commissioning purposes, and you swear, affirm or make the required declaration before the Commissioner.

Documents That May Require an In-Person Notary
Not every document can be completed online.
An in-person appointment may be required where you need a Notary Public to:
- certify a true copy of an original document;
- perform a formal notarial act;
- notarize a signature where physical presence is legally required;
- inspect an original document;
- prepare documents for authentication or apostille purposes where original notarization is required; or
- satisfy a receiving organization that specifically requires in-person notarization.
If you are unsure, send us your document before booking and we can determine whether we offer the required service online or whether you require an in-person appointment.
Online Commissioning vs. Online Notarization in Ontario
The terms “online notary,” “virtual notary” and “online notarization” are commonly used when people search for remote document services. However, there is an important legal distinction in Ontario.
Online Commissioning
Available OnlineOntario permits remote commissioning of eligible oaths and declarations when the requirements of Ontario Regulation 431/20 are satisfied.
Remote commissioning can therefore be used for many affidavits, statutory declarations and other sworn documents.
Online Notarization
Not Available RemotelyFormal notarial acts under Ontario's Notaries Act cannot currently be performed remotely because the regulation required to authorize remote or virtual notarization under that Act has not been enacted.
Accordingly, No Line Notary does not perform formal notarial acts remotely where Ontario law requires the person to be physically present before a Notary Public.
If your document requires an actual notarial act rather than commissioning, we can advise you whether an in-person appointment is required.
What Do I Need for an Online Commissioner of Oaths Appointment?
Before your appointment, you should have:
- the document requiring commissioning;
- valid identification;
- a computer, smartphone or tablet with a camera and microphone;
- a reliable internet connection; and
- access to your email.
You should generally not sign the document in advance if your signature is required to be sworn, affirmed, declared or witnessed during the appointment.
